Genital warts vaccine on the horizon?

Biotechnology advances in a vaccine for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) developed by Stressgen are entering Phase III clinical trials in the next few months and could potentially lead to the commercial availability of vaccine protection against the widespread infection of HPV, one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted diseases in the world. Stressgen reports that an estimated 80% of sexually active men and women are infected by genital HPV at some point in their lives and 5.5 million new sexually transmitted HPV infections are reported in the U.S. each year. At least 20 million people in the U.S. are already infected. HPV infection can result in diseases including internal and external genital warts and precancerous conditions, such as cervical and anal dysplasia. Without vigilent monitoring Precancerous HPV-related conditions can progress into life-threatening diseases, including cervical, anal, and head and neck cancers.

There is still a long road ahead for the development of this vaccine, but if Stressgen can successfully complete its Phase III trials it can move one step closer to its application for FDA approval and release into the market as a potential treatment for HPV.
